Apple Partners with Google’s Gemini AI to Revamp Siri
Apple has chosen Google's Gemini AI model to power an upgraded version of Siri, set to launch later this year. The multi-year partnership will integrate Gemini's models and cloud technology into Apple's foundational systems. "After careful evaluation, we determined that Google's technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models," Apple stated.
The deal follows months of speculation, with Bloomberg reporting in November that Apple considered paying $1 billion annually for Gemini's capabilities. Apple Intelligence will continue operating on-device and through Private Cloud Compute, maintaining the company's privacy standards.
Despite earlier promises, Apple delayed its Siri AI voice upgrade, citing development challenges. The tech giant has struggled to keep pace with the AI boom sparked by OpenAI's ChatGPT in late 2022. Apple currently collaborates with both OpenAI and Gemini to enhance Siri's functionality.
